Now that we've flipped the calendar and embarked on the month of October, it seems the last semblances of summer are also waning. The school year has started on a great note, and the spirit displayed at the annual Harrier Run at the end of September was inspiring. The class itself has settled into a nice working environment, and many of the students in the class have impressed me with their willingness to get involved in extracurriculars. (School is so much more enjoyable when you participate. Don't you agree?) However the new month means the weather will now start to have a little more bite and the daylight will continue to shorten.
Personally I really enjoy the autumn months. I like the changing colours of the leaves (and the fact that I don't have to mow my lawn every second day). It is perfect sleeping temperatures. The NFL season and Major League baseball playoffs are in full motion and hockey and basketball are on the horizon. My kids start getting excited about Hallowe'en and there is the Thanksgiving weekend to look forward to. Of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention the joy of jumping into leaves as they pile up on the front yard and flying a kite in the backyard.
It may also be that as the leaves start to fall and the wind picks up it reminds me of this classic Winnie the Pooh story (A Blustery Day)that my little girl loves me to read to her.: http://bit.ly/iJqcLX

In any case, autumn means that I have an opportunity to really get to know the students in my class more personally and to bond with them as we progress deeper into this school year. I look forward to continuing the journey with them.
Let me know what you think of autumn and your grade eight experience so far. What do you look forward to in the weeks ahead?
