LETTER TO THE TEACHER
Letter to the Teacher Assignment
Each term you will complete one letter to the teacher.
Novel Selection
The assignment starts with a selection of a novel that you can complete comfortably in 6-7 weeks. It is essential that you select a novel that you are interested in and can balance with all of the other subjects and activities you have in your life. You may really want to read a 500 word novel, however for some of you the pace of your life may make it hard to set aside time each day to finish this in the time alloted.
For the first novel, we will complete a "Book Pass" during class time that will expose you to novels that you may not have experimented with had you been asked to locate a novel on your own. We will discuss the importance of not "judging a book by it's cover" and look at other means of assessing a novel in a short period of time. (For example, read the passage on the back of the novel, looking at the font size, reading the critics reviews, etc.) For a more indepth description of the format of a class book pass, check out the following weblink:

We slightly altered the format, by supplying one novel to each student in the class and a "book pass page" that the students used to record and rate each novel. The students were given 1.5 minutes to familiarize and rate the novel they were given, then the entire class passes the book onto the next student and the process starts again.
Summarize the Novel
At the end of the novel you are required to summarize the basic plot line of the novel. This should be no more than 3/4 of a page. You should also include a prediction about a potential plot line sequel to the novel.
Make Connections (Text to Text, Text to Self, Text to World, Text to Media)
The discussion section is particularly important, as it requires you to think about and reflect on what you have read. Be sure to begin reading a novel and avoid leaving this until the last minute. It should be typed and is usually 2-3 pages.
