Class Read Aloud - Underground to Canada
A young, strong slave girl and her mother are sold apart when their master (Massa Hensen) falls ill. As Julily is sold from the plantation, she keeps thinking about a place called Canada that her mother told her about. She had said that if Jullily got there she would be free, as slavery was not allowed there. The slaves left the Hensen plantation in Virginia to be taken to the Riley plantation Mississippi in the Deep South where Julily met Liza, another slave girl, who is crippled as she once tried to escape and was severely whipped. They escape together with two friends, Lester and Adam. Pursued by their master, they make their way through the United States to Canada on the Underground Railroad with the help of Alexander Milton Ross, a Canadian abolitionist. They eventually arrive safely, Adam makes it to Canada, But dies of blood poisoning caused by his slave chains which were attached to the cart of slaves.

A full e-book copy of the text can be found online at the following weblink (credit goes to a Mr. Grant from parts unknown for making this available online):
A movie adaptation of the book can be found online. It is called "Race to Freedom: The Underground Railroad." It was a television movie created in 1994, but it includes many of the same characters and themes of "Underground to Canada." I have included a movie trailer for those who are interested.
I have included an audio version of the novel for those students who have difficulty reading on their own. The chapter questions are also included under each audio chapter.
The remainder of the novel was not available from the reader from the above clips, however a full novel reading can be found at the following weblink:
